Behind the Leash: My Life and Experiences
A Brief Insight into My Story:
Growing up in a household filled with pets, from rescue dogs, cats, and many others. I was fortunate to be surrounded by boundless furry affection. My parents instilled in my big sister and I the importance of respecting animals, in particular, the invaluable lesson on interpreting a dog's body language and approaching them in a calm manner. Our family has always embraced rescue animals, even extending our care to injured wildlife like hedgehogs whenever possible.
One cherished family member is the charming Paddy, our 11-year-old retired racing greyhound. Welcoming him into our home at the age of three in 2016, we soon realized how much he had yet to learn about life as a pet. Having spent his earlier years as a racer, his expertise lay primarily in running in straight lines, leaving us to guide him to the much more relaxed and comfortable lifestyle of a pet dog. It was akin to welcoming a bewildered puppy into our midst, as we introduced him not only to the joys of being a dog but also to the creature comforts of rescue life.
Owning Paddy has been an educational journey, not merely in understanding canine nutrition due to his various health conditions. Additionally, I've become adept in pet first aid, thanks to Paddy's frequent need for care. (He's the reason why I always carry vet wrap and antiseptic spray). Paddy has not only brought joy into our lives but has also served as a constant reminder of the remarkable growth a dog can achieve with just a bit of compassion, patience, and unconditional love.
My Experiences and Aspirations:
With over five years of professional experience, I've had the privilege of working with animals in a variety of roles. From tending to animals in kennels and catteries to caring for horses, sheep, and pigs in stables, my journey has been diverse and enriching.
My passion for animal welfare led me to pursue a Foundation Degree in Animal Science and Welfare at the University of East Anglia. During my final year, the UK went into lockdown due to COVID-19. Despite the challenges, I found comfort in volunteering at rescues and offering assistance to those in need of dog walks or pet care while in isolation. This experience ignited my determination, inspiring me to establish my own professional animal care business in 2021.
Although running my own business wasn't initially part of my plan, it has become the centrepiece of my life in the most incredible way. Now, I have the privilege of pursuing a career I adore, dedicating my days to something I am truly passionate about. This work has deepened my commitment to the rehabilitation of rescue pets, inspiring me to enrol in an online Canine Behaviour Training Level 3 Diploma program. My goal is to enhance the quality of care I provide to all the rescues under my care.
When it comes to envisioning my dreams for the future, it has always revolved around a home overflowing with pets. Now, as I contemplate more realistic possibilities, I find myself dreaming of owning land and a home tailored to welcome rescues of all shapes, sizes, and needs. A place where I can continue my mission of providing them with love, care, and a second chance at happiness.
